Passing Portrait

Premieres 28th and 29th of January at TOU. Tickets here.

Passing Portrait is a solo dance performance that elevates and examines one transmasculine body.

To be a cis-passing male body means that the world recognises you as a man without further questions.

This performance is about observing others peoples ideas on gender from the perspective of this passing body — a body that is young enough, adult enough, large enough, attractive enough, white enough, whole enough, masculine enough. A body that does not challenge the norms of male and female. A body that is not doubted for its gender identity and is therefore allowed to simply exist.

In recent years, trans bodies have been subjected to extensive public debate — reduced to political issues, medical diagnoses, moral dilemmas, or economic burdens for the welfare system.

Passing Portrait invites reflection on the politicisation of the body. What defines the rules of gender and body, why does one conform to these rules, and who contributes to upholding them?
